Description

The 350 MVA Emergency Peaking Plant is a critical energy infrastructure project developed to enhance Ireland’s energy security and maintain a reliable electricity supply during periods of peak demand and winter generation shortages. Constructed on the site of the former West Offaly Power Station, the facility demonstrates the sustainable repurposing of existing energy infrastructure while supporting Ireland’s transition to a more resilient and low-carbon energy system. Featuring eight GE gas turbines connected to the 110 kV transmission network, the plant provides rapid-response generation capacity that strengthens grid resilience, supports security of supply, improves network reliability, and facilitates the integration of renewable energy sources across Ireland’s electricity network.
